I was born an Arkansan; a motherless teen who kept house for my father, went to school and worked at the downtown theater while becoming a High School Graduate. I became a Bookkeeper, a Newlywed, a Mississippian, then I was Girl Friday to Godfrey & Bassett, Struggling Young Architects, until I became a Mother with three babes in three years and another 5 years later for dessert.
We moved to Alabama in 1961, where I was the best Den Mother this side of the Mississippi. I was active in the PTA on the local and County levels and the PTSA at Banks High School. I led fundraisers like Spaghetti Suppers and selling light bulbs.
After 17 years of being a stay at home wife and mother, I became a Production Scheduler for a pipe and fittings foundry, a legal assistant (slave) to a wonderful woman lawyer, and finally a Girl Friday again.
Our hobbies included football fandom (remember the Birmingham Vulcans, and the B’ham Americans?), and membership in the Society for Creative Anachronism.
I was active in Science Fiction Fandom for almost 30 years, attending and helping run regional conventions and Worldcons.
This blog will touch on many things, past and present. Enjoy!
Charlotte,
I finally took the time to browse through your prolific writings. There are many similarities in our lives (like other women of our generation, I suspect).
My three daughters born 1961, ’62, and ’64. Surprise son in 1971 (a preemie, at 2lb.10 oz.) I was at home for 16 yrs, with the kids, started my first real full time job in 1975. Have had a number of work experiences, all as Customer Service Rep. or Inside Sales, depending on the company. One of those stints was with the Taylor and Fenn Foundry in Windsor, CT. I don’t run into too many people who’ve worked in a foundry, so I was amazed to discover you have!
Your writing is inspiring me. You have incredible energy!!
Thanks a bunch for commenting. It means a lot to know someone is reading my natterings. I’m just a voice in the wilderness…
Please contact me. I have some photos of Conus, Rosa Lee,Minnie Louise her mother Minnie and father Charley.
I was going through my grand mother’s old keep sakes about 2 months ago and found the photos.
The reason I was going through the old box was that I was looking for infomation to add to a family tree a cousin had started.
Conus’s mother Minnie was born May 1879 in Switzerland. Right now a researcher in Switzerland is trying to find Minnie’s grand parents.
Send your email so I can invite you to the family tree and send you a copy of the photos that I have of your family.
The only child of Conus I had found was Evelyn Rose Rheubush b. in Jonesboro.
I found your page when I was trying to find the father of Charley F Wilson.
Billy McAfee
Conus Wilson had two children with her husband Hubert M. Rheubush: Evelyn Rose born 1-16-31 and Charlotte born 1-7-36. Evelyn died in 1995.
Grandfather Wilson was a formal man. I cannot imagine anyone calling him Charley. His and Minnie’s youngest daughter, Minnie Louise , had four children: a daughter who died young in an auto accident on Christmas Eve, and three sons: Bobby, Donnie and Charles.
